SUMMARY:Portland Monthly BEAM Meet & Chat - Elixir\, Erlang\, Gleam languages
DESCRIPTION:Note: Your RSVP is required in order to attend this event.\n\nLet’s get together for an informal BEAM PDX hangout: coffee\, conversation\, and light co-working.\n\nThis is a low-key monthly meetup for folks working with Elixir\, Erlang\, Gleam\, and other BEAM languages\, aimed at reconnecting the local community and rebuilding momentum after a long quiet stretch. We’ll holding this on the second Thursday of each month.\n\nThere will be opportunities to:\n\n– Ask questions about Elixir and other BEAM languages\n– Share what you’ve been working on (or stuck on)\n– Get help with programming or design problems\n– Co-work: get things done with like-minded folks nearby\n– Brainstorm ideas for future talk-based meetups and identify potential speakers\n– Bring your laptop if you’d like. It’s totally optional.\n\nNew to BEAM languages\, or just curious? You’re very welcome.\n\nPlease RSVP so we know roughly how many people to expect. If your plans change\, un-RSVP when you can.\n\nThis meetup is also part of our transition away from Meetup to a new home for the group\, where we’ll be organizing future events.\nTags: elixir\, erlang\, functional programming\nImported from: http://calagator.org/events/1250482700

SUMMARY:Cloud Native PDX September: Observability Night!
DESCRIPTION:For September\, we’re taking advantage of a speaker in town for DevOpsDaysPDX\, and making it an all-observability night\, with FluentBit and OpenTelemetry.\n\nDate: Wednesday\, September 16\, 2026\nTime: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM\nLocation: SteepleJack Brewing\, Fireside Room\, 2400 NE Broadway\, Portland\n\nTalks are typically recorded (opt-in by speakers)\n\nA big thank you to SuSE for sponsoring catering at SteepleJack\, as well as Eric’s travel.\n\nFirst Presentation: No C\, No Opaque AI: Watch Your First Fluent Bit Contribution Happen Live\n\nSpeaker: Eric D. Schabell\, SuSE\n\nContributing to a CNCF graduated project feels out of reach until someone shows you exactly how it happens. In this session\, that someone is on stage doing it in real time — spotting a gap between what the Fluent Bit codebase actually does and what the docs say\, opening a branch on a live fork\, running the project’s prose linter\, writing a properly signed commit\, and pushing a pull request that closes a real tracked issue. Every step\, no shortcuts\, no slides pretending to be a terminal.\n\nYou will leave knowing the two-repo mental model that makes Fluent Bit doc contributions work\, the git habits that signal credibility to maintainers\, and the AI guardrails that keep your name attached to work you actually stand behind. Your first PR does not require deep C knowledge. It requires knowing where to look\, how to show your work\, and when to keep your hands on the wheel."\n\nSecond Presentation: Devs\, Transform (Your Data) and Roll Out!: Learning and Leveraging OTTL\n\nSpeaker: Reese Lee\, New Relic\n\nThe OpenTelemetry Collector is OTel’s power tool for ingesting and processing your app and infrastructure data\, but there’s even more you can do with your data before it reaches your backend! Learn how to start leveraging OTTL\, or OpenTelemetry Transformation Language\, to manage your data volume and quality. We’ll explore the syntax basics and its underlying architecture within the Collector\, where its strength really comes into play\, when to use it (or not!)\, and more.\nTags: kubernetes\, containers\, cloud\, intrastructure\, devops\, observability\nImported from: http://calagator.org/events/1250482649

SUMMARY:PDXPUG MeetUp: Migrating to a Temporal Schema
DESCRIPTION:Please note different time and location this month at (https://www.upstartcollective.org/) at the U.S. Bancorp Tower (a.k.a. Big Pink). Please RSVP on MeetUp. Tuesday September 8\, 2026 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.\n\nCoinciding with (https://devopsdays.org/events/2026-portland-or/welcome/)\, Sept 8-10\, 2026.\n\nIn v18\, Postgres got temporal primary keys\, unique constraints\, and foreign keys (with `NO ACTION`). Hopefully in v19 we’ll have `UPDATE/DELETE FOR PORTION OF`. So it’s a good time to start thinking about migrating your schema to a temporal structure. Some advantages include:\n\n– Easier queries and joins to reconstruct historical data.\n– A better way to do soft-deletes (preserving referential integrity).\n– No bugs from foreign key references to since-updated data.\n– A less ad hoc way of representing historical data.\n\nThis talk will explore how to migrate your schema to include application-time `daterange` and `tstzrange` columns. I’ll use an existing schema for a time-tracking and invoicing application (used by me for over 12 years)\, showing the pain points of the old structure\, not sparing my pride at some bad decisions\, and give an approach to bring it all into a nicer temporal structure.\n\nWe will also talk about some remaining pain points in using temporal tables\, and suggestions to mitigate them.\nIf you are contemplating a move to temporal tables\, this talk will give you an overview of the landscape.\n\nPresented by Paul Jungwirth:\n\nPaul is a freelance software developer in Portland\, Oregon.\nHe has built applications with Postgres since 2010 and is the author of several extensions.\nHis Postgres contributions include work on GiST indexes\, multiranges\, and SQL:2011 application-time features.\nTags: postgres\, postgresql\nImported from: http://calagator.org/events/1250482662
